Included in Pope's Vision for Reform of United Nations is Pro-Life/Family Reform

VATICAN, February 11, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a meeting with the president of the 58th General Assembly of the United Nations on Saturday, Pope John Paul II stressed that reform of the United Nations is "'a clear moral and political obligation which calls for prudence and determination and a necessary prerequisite for the growth of an international order at the service of the whole human family."

Media coverage of the meeting has tended to focus on the fact that the Pope considers the United Nations "a significant means for promoting the universal common good." However, understanding the Pope's aspirations for the United Nations and its efforts to work toward world peace is contingent on comprehending John Paul's vision of peace.

The Pope subscribes to the same view of peace as espoused by Mother Teresa. In 1994 Mother Teresa spoke to assembled US politicians saying: "But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child - a direct killing of the innocent child - murder by the mother herself." Pope John Paul II, who chose the October 19, 2003 25th anniversary of his pontificate to declare Mother Teresa a saint, echoed Mother Teresa in May 2003 saying, "there can be no authentic peace without respect for life, especially for the innocent and defenseless, as are unborn children. Basic coherence requires that those who seek peace defend life. No action for peace can be effective if attacks on life at every stage are not opposed with the same effort."

The reform, the Pope said to Assembly President Julian Robert Hunte "will not only ensure an effective superior instance for the just resolution of international problems, but also enable the United Nations to become an ever more highly respected moral authority for the international community."

The United Nations, through its various committees and countless non-governmental organizations has been at the forefront of advocating international acceptance of homosexuality and the bestowing of rights normally reserved for the family on homosexual unions. The Catholic Church has been a formidable obstacle in fulfilling that agenda. While UN leader Kofi Annan has come out in favour of homosexual 'marriage', the Pope during his February 20, 1994 Angelus address said, "The bond between two men or two women cannot constitute a real family and much less can the right be attributed to that union to adopt children without a family".
