VATICAN, October 18, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In an address to the plenary assembly of the Papal Council for the Family today, Pope John Paul II extended his thanks to those assembled who work to promote the family calling it a "very important task for the Church and society." Apart from keeping family in a spiritual connection to Christ to safeguard it from dangers, the pope urged parents to communicate with their children about human dignity and true love.

The pope noted that lack of time and a feeling by parents that they are ill prepared or even afraid to take on the task of education of their children should not deter them. He warned that due to a lack of dialogue children do not find in their parents authentic models to imitate and go elsewhere to look for models which often "make light of the dignity of man and true love."

"The banalization of sex , in a society saturated with eroticism, and the lack of reference to ethical principles, can ruin the lives of children, adolescents and young people, preventing them from forming a responsible, mature love, and the harmonious development of their personality," he said.
