POPE: ALLOWING ABORTION TURNS
DEMOCRACIES INTO "TOTALITARIAN REGIMES"
Encourages Natural Law as the Basis for
Discussion with Non-Believers
VATICAN, February 28, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Pope John Paul II warned
Wednesday that the "grave danger that the false
interpretation of human rights" which would permit abortion,
"can drive democratic regimes to transform themselves into
totalitarian regimes." The Pope made his remarks in an
address to the Pontifical Academy for Life.
"The church affirms the right to life to every innocent
human being at the moment of its existence," he told the
participants. The Pope blasted the "distinction sometimes
made in certain official documents between a human being and a
human person" which would "apply the right to life and
physical integrity only to people who are already born," as
"an artificial distinction without scientific or
philosophical foundation." He continued: "Every
human being, from his conception to his natural death, has the
inviolable right to life and deserves all respect due to the
human person."
The Pope noted that "natural law" is the "only
possible basis for a true dialogue and an authentic collaboration
between believers and non-believers." Through natural law,
"a truth common to all human beings", human reason is
able to eliminate "the presumed conflict between the freedom
and the nature," said the Pope. "Freedom belongs to the
rational nature of man, and with reason it can must be guided."

UK SCIENTISTS HAVE BEEN GIVEN PERMISSION TO CREATE HUMAN EMBRYO CLONES
LONDON, February 27, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In a development that has horrified much of the civilized world, scientists in the UK have been given final approval to create human embryo clones. A House of Lords committee has authorized the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to issue licences to allow the practice. The HFEA is expected to issue the licences immediately.
The decision allows an earlier legislative decision to allow the human cloning research to go forward. The pro-life movement had blocked the law allowing 'therapeutic cloning' arguing successfully at the High Court that the HFEA did not have the authority to regulate it.

VATICAN AFFIRMS "MAJORITY RULES" CANNOT JUSTIFY ABORTION
VATICAN CITY, February 27, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In a February 25 address to the Pontifical Academy for Life, Archbishop Julian Herranz, president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, said the "majority rules" argument used to justify abortion is not worthy of a democracy that claims to uphold basic human rights.
In his address he said that the primary right to life cannot
"be understood either as a concession by the authorities,
nor can it be dispensed by them, because its foundation lies in
the very nature and dignity of the human being." He noted
that for 3,000 years democracies have pursued the dual obligation
of ensuring citizens' participation in government and protecting
basic rights. See the Vatican Information Service coverage:

VATICAN CITY, FEB 26, 2002 (VIS) - Yesterday, in the Vatican's Old Synod Hall, the eighth plenary assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life was held. The theme of this year's gathering is: "Nature and dignity of the human being as a foundation for the right to life. The challenges of the contemporary cultural context."
The first work session was inaugurated by Archbishop Julian Herranz, president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. In his address he affirmed that the primary right to life cannot "be understood either as a concession by the authorities, nor can it be dispensed by them, because its foundation lies in the very nature and dignity of the human being."
The second address was given by Andrzej Szostek, professor of ethics at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. He highlighted that evolutionism and liberalism are "insufficient for a full understanding of man, for whom they deny the existence of an absolute truth."
For his part, the Austrian professor, W. Waldstein, emeritus of the Lateran University in Rome, spoke on "the capacity of the human mind to know natural law."
During the afternoon session there were addresses from Sergio
Belardinelli, professor of the sociology of communication
processes at the University of Bologna, Italy, who spoke on
"nature in the cosmological, biological, anthropological and
ecological sense;" and from John Finnis, professor of law
and the philosophy of law at the University of Oxford, England,
who spoke on "nature and natural law in the present
philosophical and theological debate."

CHURCH IN NETHERLANDS FORBIDS CATHOLIC BURIALS FOR THOSE PLANNING EUTHANASIA
AMSTERDAM, February 25, 2002, (LSN.ca) - The Catholic Church in the Netherlands is drawing up pastoral guidelines on dealing with cases of requests for Catholic burial for people who are planning to undergo voluntary euthanasia. Catholic News Service (CNS) reports that the Dutch church spokesman for the Hertogenbosch Diocese Micheil Savelsbergh confirmed that the Catholic Church cannot give religious burials to people who planned to be euthanized.
Savelsbergh told CNS in a Feb 21 interview that church funerals could be given to people who already had died from euthanasia, but not for patients whose deaths still were being planned that way.

BELGIAN UNIVERSITY TO TEACH DOCTORS HOW TO COMMIT EUTHANASIA
BRUSSELS, February 25, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Belgian Free University in Brussels is planning to teach medical student how to commit euthanasia. Professor Wim Betz of the university's department of medicine explained to the media, "If a doctor decides to commit euthanasia, it's better he does it correctly from the start." Last October the Belgian Senate voted to legalize euthanasia with the lower chamber of parliament expected to approve the legislation this year.
Final passage of the bill will make Belgium the only country in Europe to follow the Netherlands in allowing euthanasia. Last June the Belgian government also followed the Netherlands in proposing a cabinet bill to legalize homosexual marriage. The government followed Britain's lead in allowing the abortifacient "morning-after" pill to be available to the public without a prescription.

ABORTIONISTS CLAMOURING FOR
MANDATED ABORTION REFERRALS IN NEW BRUNSWICK
Bishop Comes to Defense of Pro-Life Doctors
ST JOHN, February 19, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Pro-abortionists in New Brunswick are taking aim at the Saint John medical community, accusing them of denying women access to abortion and birth control. Peter Ryan of Campaign Life Coalition New Brunswick told LifeSite that the Morgentaler abortuary is agitating for the numerous pro-life MD's in the province, to be forced to act against their consciences and refer patients for abortions or abortifacients such as the morning-after pill.
The New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSNB) in its latest bulletin, posted on its Web site, is seeking input from members on whether doctors should be mandated to refer patients to other doctors. Responding to the reports, J. Edward Troy, Bishop Emeritus of Saint John wrote in defense of the doctors. In an article published in the Telegraph Journal Bishop Troy points out that the morning after pill, "is not really a contraceptive but rather an abortifacient." He notes that pro-life doctors, "rightly consider that abortion is the taking of a human life at an early stage in its development."
Bishop Troy criticized the arguments of the director of an abortion clinic who attempted to argue that doctors should be forced to refer women for abortions on moral grounds. "Now this judgment comes from someone who is managing a business devoted to the destruction of babies in the womb! Talk about the moral high ground!," wrote the Bishop. He points out the irony that the same folks who are whining about the pushing of morality are ready and willing to impose their own morality. Bishop Troy concludes, "I salute physicians - no doubt the vast majority of practitioners - who refuse to ignore conscience and moral principle in the exercise of their calling."

WEBSITE LISTS 347
WOMEN KILLED BY LEGAL ABORTIONS
The Overwhelming Majority of Abortion-Related Deaths Remain
Undiscovered
LIFE DYNAMICS, February 11, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Life Dynamics, a Texas-based pro-life group has created a website listing women killed by legal abortions, along with information regarding the circumstances of their deaths. "The Blackmun Wall" project is named after Harry Blackmun, the Supreme Court justice who wrote the Roe v. Wade decision and launched America's abortion holocaust.
Life Dynamics reports that it has statistics from both state and federal reporting agencies documenting many more abortion-related deaths than are listed on the Blackmun wall. However, because there were no further details on them, the group was not able to include them. Additionally, Life Dynamics notes that their research clearly indicates that, for a variety of reasons, the overwhelming majority of abortion-related deaths remain undiscovered. Abortion related deaths and post abortion complications are frequently not reported by medical staff and institutions as having resulted from an abortion.
Life Dynamics will continue to investigate and catalogue the deaths of women that are due to legalized abortion. The Blackmun Wall will be updated, as new information is received. The wall is comprised of 29 panels, listing 347 women, along with the available details of each one's death.

A Catholic Magazine in Lebanon Promotes Sex Education
St Charbel for Life Feb, 10,2002 I was stunned when I opened a Catholic Magazine from Lebanon Hayatouna AlShabab # 71 Jan Issue 2002 under the Tittle: The Desire is not a vice and Masturbation is not a Solution p10 . I had the impression that it looks like a Pornography Magazine with a picture of a Lusting man and this is not in line with the Catholic Church teaching. Study shows that Sex education is the first gateway to the sex exploitation and a trap from the Devil…

POPE WARNS AGAINST ABUSES OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN LENTEN MESSAGE
VATICAN, February 6, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Yesterday, in his message released for Lent 2002, Pope John Paul II warned against abuses of biotechnology. "The achievements of medicine and biotechnology can sometimes lead man to think of himself as his own creator, and to succumb to the temptation of tampering with 'the tree of life,'" he said.
The Pope touched on issues surrounding the human embryo. "The beginning of life and its marvellous development: this is a gift. And because it is gift, life can never be regarded as a possession or as private property, even if the capabilities we now have to improve the quality of life can lead us to think that man is the 'master' of life."
The Pope underlined the Church's openness to scientific advancements which are at the service of humanity and its opposition to practices which fly in the face of human dignity. "It is also worth repeating here that not everything that is technically possible is morally acceptable," he said. "Scientific work aimed at securing a quality of life more in keeping with human dignity is admirable, but it must never be forgotten that human life is a gift, and that it remains precious even when marked by suffering and limitations."

POPE CALLS FOR LEGAL RECOGNITION OF THE RIGHT-TO-LIFE OF EMBRYOS
VATICAN, February 4, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Pope John Paul II, spoke yesterday in Italy to mark the Day of Life which is celebrated on the first Sunday of February. Before his midday prayer of the Angelus the pope addressed the assembled crowd calling on humanity to "recognize the value of life implies consistent measures from the legal point of view, especially the protection of human beings who are unable to defend themselves". Society must "guarantee to every human the right … from conception to natural death,"said the Pope in his message. "In the case of the human embryo, science has shown that it is a human individual possessing its own identity from conception," he said. "As a result, it is logical that this identity should be recognized legally - above all, its fundamental right to life."

GROUP VOWS TO HAND OUT CONDOMS AT
WORLD YOUTH DAY
Anti-Catholic Billboards by Catholics for a Free Choice
TORONTO, February 4, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The pro-abortion group that calls itself Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC), has launched a campaign in Toronto to target the 750,000 youth expected at the upcoming World Youth Day. The campaign includes billboard and public transit advertising as well as a planned condom and propaganda distribution at the Catholic event featuring Pope John Paul II, the world's most renowned pro-life and pro-family advocate.
Kathleen Howes, Canadian coordinator of CFFC said the condoms to be pedaled to the youth delegates would carry the message, "Don't leave it up to your Guardian Angel." The billboards, two of which are already up in the Toronto area say, "Because the bishops ban condoms, innocent people die."
Monsignor Peter Schonenbach, general secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, was quoted in the Feb. 1 Globe and Mail as strangely responding, "It's a free country. They can do what they want … The church is stuck with its position on this." The Globe further reported that Schonenbach "said the issue has been difficult for the global church, which embraces different social viewpoints; he likened it to Pope Paul VI's controversial and unexpected decision to ban the birth-control pill in 1968.”
Jim Hughes of Campaign Life Coalition strongly disagreed with the CFCC campaign saying that "the Church's position on these issues is solid” and that "Paul VI's encyclical was prophetic". Hughes further commented that "developments in society at large have proven that the moral teachings of John Paul II are vastly superior and more loving towards young people than the corrupting policies of the Playboy Foundation financed CFCC ".
